"Teaching and learning are good. Some outstanding lessons were seen". - Ofsted 2008

Teaching and Learning

We have very high expectations for everyone at The Sir John Colfox School. Our goal is that all students will develop lively, enquiring minds. Through their learning our students equip themselves with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for life in a rapidly changing world.

At The Sir John Colfox School we are a community of learners. We are committed to ensuring the best quality teaching in all subjects and classrooms. Teachers work with their colleagues throughout the year, planning together, sharing good ideas for lessons and teaching each other new skills. Students are regularly consulted for feedback on their teaching and learning. This includes the Student Research Group who observe lessons and advise teachers on how to improve their practice.

Encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning is central to our focus on Assessment for Learning. Feedback to students about their work not only provides them with information about their current performance but also sets specific individual targets for improvement. This personalised approach becomes a dialogue between the teacher and student, who work in partnership to raise attainment.

Our approach to teaching and learning enables students to develop the skills and attitudes of expert learners so that they can face the future with confidence as they continue in further education, enter the world of work and take on the responsibility of citizenship.
