Head of Department: Mrs. Louise BurgessCoursesYear 7 Autumn Term Self Image Students use drawings from observation as a starting point to develop ideas for their own painting. Artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani and Bacon are used as inspiration Spring Term Exploration Students use a wide range of materials and techniques to explore texture and mask making. Natural forms are used as a starting point before students develop their imaginative skills and produce a clay alien creature hatching out of an egg. Summer Term
Journeys Students explore the concept of journeys (personal, physical, emotional). A variety of artists are looked at before looking closely at Aboriginal Art. Students develop a variety of ideas before producing their own piece of work about ‘their journey'. Year 8 Autumn Term Close Up - Natural Forms Students produce an abstract mixed media piece based on a close- up section of a drawing of a natural form. Leading up to making this piece students look at a variety of artists for inspiration. They experiment with using a wide range of materials and techniques and develop a variety of ideas relating to composition. Spring Term Visual Narrative Students develop their own personal imagery to use in their work and explore how pattern and shape can be used to create interesting and original compositions. Students look at the work of Betty La Duke for ideas. Students produce a personal final piece which is highly patterned and decorative using paint and oil pastel. Summer Term African Art - Distortion/Exaggeration Students explore the concept of distortion and focus on the figure. As well as researching into African Art and Zimbabwean sculpture they produce a series of drawings based upon the human form. Students then develop their own ideas before producing a clay sculpture. Year 9 Autumn Term Surrealism Students look at the work of Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte as well as looking at modern day adverts. Personal surreal ideas are developed through drawing and sketching before producing a surreal final painting. Students also have the opportunity to develop a three dimensional final piece. Spring Term Identity A highly personal project students start off by looking at 3 artists. Keith Haring, Basquiat and Chagall. Students identify the key characteristics of the artists' work before developing their own practical ideas. After half term students have the opportunity to develop their own final piece, this can be related to artists that they have looked at in class or be inspired by the extended research homework project set at the start of the project.
