| School Homework Policy |
|
Homework is central to the learning activities of the school. It can be a stimulating activity which consolidates and supplements what is learnt in class and extends students of all abilities. It can foster initiative, independence and responsibility and is a link between home and school. All students are expected to do homework and parents are asked to do everything they can to encourage the organisation of time, materials, resources and a place in which to study. Parents are asked to promote reading in particular and encourage the use of the school library. At the beginning of the school year each student is given a Student Planner which contains a variety of information and guidelines, tailored to the needs of the age of the student. It is designed to help students plan their lives at school and manage their time. Replacement planners can be purchased at Student Reception. Parents are asked to contribute to the success of study skills by seeing that the homework set is carefully and correctly done and by signing the Student Planner at the end of each week, adding relevant comments whenever these are appropriate. Homework sessions range from 30 - 40 minutes and there are up to 16 per week according to age. GCSE students should regard the school homework schedule as a basic minimum, supplementing it with extended study on their own initiative. Sixth Form students should expect to devote at least ten hours per week to independent study time, divided between private study periods and work at home. Tutors are asked to check the Student Planner and encourage routine entries to enable the students to establish sound planning and an economic and efficient use of their busy lives. Teachers are also asked to keep a record of all homework set, so that easy reference can be made as necessary. |
