Where can lost property be found?Lost property is kept in the uniform store which is opposite Mr Middleton's office in the foyer. Items of uniform, sports kit and clothes can be claimed from there before school. It is the student's responsibility to claim their lost property and ensuring that all clothing is properly labelled is very helpful. More valuable lost property such as jewellery and keys are held in the main reception office and should be claimed during breaks. What happens if a student is injured or becomes unwell at school? The school has a number of designated fully-trained first aid officers who are available at all times to attend to any medical emergencies that may arise and the school has an alarm system which is accessed by every teacher - fortunately medical emergencies are rare! If a student is unwell in school they will be sent by their teacher or head of house to the general office where a first aid officer will assess them, offer advice if appropriate, and arrange for a parent to collect if necessary. For this reason it is important that the school has up-to-date telephone numbers of all contacts. What do parents do if a child is unwell and unable to attend school? If a student is unwell parents are asked to call the school's absence line on 01308 422291 and Press 1 to report pupil absence prior to 10am. There is an ansaphone and parents are asked to leave the name of the student, their tutor group and the reason for the absence. This process should be followed each morning for every day the student is absent. Once the student returns to school they should bring in a letter from home confirming the duration and reason for their absence and hand this to their form tutor. The school operates an absence calling system whereby if a message has not been received for an absent student their parents will be telephoned during the course of the day. How do we know if the school is closed? If the school has to be closed as an emergency, due to bad weather for example, an announcement will be made on local radio. These are, 2CR Bournemouth (102.3 FM), Gemini FM (96.4, 97 or 103), Wessex FM (96 & 97.2 FM) and BBC Dorset (96.1 & 103.8 FM). How do we know if it is Week A or Week B?The school diary can be downloaded from our website which clearly states which week it is. The televisions in reception also broadcast this information. What arrangements are made for students coming into Year 7 from primary school? The school has a very successful induction programme which helps both students and their parents to feel confident in their transition from primary to secondary school education. This involves senior staff visiting individual classes and discussing them with their primary teachers. There is a comprehensive programme of induction days at The Sir John Colfox School where Year 6 students spend time in lessons, getting used to the school and meeting older students. Nearer the time there is a parents evening where parents and new students can meet their form tutors, head of house and new classmates. In close collaboration with the primary school every effort is made to ensure that friendship groups are taken into account and that the whole process is a pleasant and comfortable transition.
