First Place at Global Rock Challenge - March '09

The Sir John Colfox Rock Challenge dance team were awarded first place at the Southampton Guildhall last Friday after months of hard work. Teaming up with dancers from Weymouth College with choreography by Rachel Ball and Rhea Soulsby resulted in the perfect combination to send them to the Southern Open Final in Portsmouth in May. Their dance, entitled ‘Chains', draws attention to the exploitation of child labour.

The Rock Challenge is an international performing arts competition for schools and colleges that drives home the message against drugs, smoking and alcohol. It aims to encourage young people to lead healthy lifestyles, have fun and be their best without the need for tobacco, alcohol or any other substance.

Funding for the venture was secured through the Sports Unlimited funding initiative aimed at increasing the amount of physical activity opportunities for young people.

" I was really delighted for our school and our students", said Headteacher, Kay Taylor.  "We have been entering Rock Challenge for many years and came third in 2007 but are delighted to come first this time.  Many of the schools we were up against were large performing arts colleges who have spent lots of money on sets and technical support.  Our win was due to the talent, skills and enthusiasm of our students and the staff who helped them.  I am delighted for them all and wish them all the best at the Open Final".
