Following a brief to create a brochure, collage or pod cast that communicates how they feel about their local World Heritage Site based around one the World Heritage themes of tourism, identity, the environment or peace, the year 8 team produced a film, a PowerPoint presentation, two sketches and three three-dimensional collages considering the effects of tourism on our natural environment. Their collages were strikingly original depictions of the benefits and drawbacks of tourism to our beaches and natural surroundings, urging us all to get involved to protect them. "I am very proud of what the children have achieved" said Nicki Schantz, language college coordinator. "Developing our links with the Jurassic Coast team is one of the ways in which we are working with the wider community to bring learning to life while at the same time raising the awareness of the importance of sustainable development in our environment." Winning the competition means that these students will represent the Jurassic Coast at the UNESCO World Heritage Youth Summit. They will be doing a presentation to explain why the Jurassic Coast is special to them as well as being of global significance to us all. As well as being selected as representatives to the Youth Summit, both of our year 8 teams entering the UNESCO World Heritage competition have been selected to represent young people on behalf of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site at the UNESCO Education conference. They will be participating in workshops and form part of a forum working with World Heritage site managers from all over the UK to help them develop action plans, activities and resources which will encourage better understanding and appreciation of these special areas. The winning Year 8 students representing the Jurassic Coast at the UNESCO World Heritage Youth Summit are Rachel Violet, Joseph Grew-McEvoy, Amelia Newman, Sophie Halford and Isobel Buchanan. Joining them at the UNESCO Education Conference representing the views of young people to World Heritage Site managers will be Ollie Turner, Ben Mayne, Tom Wilson, Stefan Matthews and Charlie Cadwell. The students found the experience both rewarding and exciting. Isobel Buchanan said, "I really enjoyed our presentation and to win was fantastic. I am really looking forward to the World summit." |
