Colfox student Ben Cantrell has secured a place on the prestigious Degree Apprenticeship Programme with Leonardo Helicopters in Yeovil.
Ben, a Year 13 student who recently completed his A Levels in Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Resistant Materials in the Beaminster Colfox Joint Sixth Form said, ‘I am really pleased to have been accepted on the Degree Apprenticeship. It’s been a really tough recruitment process but I’m excited.’
Mr Adam Teasdale, Head of Sixth Form at Colfox added, ‘Ben is an exceptional student and this pathway is absolutely perfect for him. He has made successful applications to some of the top universities in the country but the Degree Apprenticeship from Leonardo’s will challenge Ben in a practical, problem-solving environment. It is absolutely the right choice for Ben.’
The Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship, which ‘seeks to provide the engineers for the future’ will take Ben five years to complete. He will learn the engineering principles and practices needed to support Leonardo’s range of in-service helicopters. Aircraft supported from the Yeovil site are Sea King, Lynx, AW101, AW159 and the Apache helicopters. Ben will also be provided with other experience, for example aircraft maintenance, repair design, fault investigation and logistic support solutions.
In his first year of study, Ben will work full time at Yeovil College to complete a qualification in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering. He expects to move on to work placements at Leonardo Helicopters in the second year, whilst starting another qualification in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. In Year three, Ben will start the Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering at Yeovil, and will progress to Plymouth University to start a Level 6 top up Degree (BEng) in Aeronautical Engineering in Year four.
Ben won the Colfox ‘Community Award’ this year for his volunteering work with local young people. He has received the Lions Young Leaders in Service Gold Award, and is due to complete his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. He is a Leader for the 1st West Bay Sea Scout group and also helps to run the land-based Jurassic Unit of the Explorer Scouts.
