Assistant Head Mr Tom Neill

Director of KS4

Key roles and responsibilities: Director of KS4 (Y9 – Y11), KS4 Raising Achievement Lead, Strategic Development of Literacy, Lead for PiXL (Academic) Strategy.

Career overview: I joined Sir John Colfox Academy in September 2016, having spent the last five years working in Plymouth. I have also taught in the USA (Florida) and south Devon

Background and interests: Whilst studying English at Newcastle University I became interested in teaching, following participation in an outreach programme in the local area. I completed my PGCE at the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol, and hold an M. Ed from the University of Cincinnati. I love exploring and developing new ideas about teaching, whether related to my subject (English), leadership, or to issues such as behaviour and assessment. Supporting students in KS4 in the process of realising their full academic potential is the main focus of my role, and one that I enjoy very much.

Teaching is a wonderful job and I feel privileged to have worked with some fantastic young people and colleagues during my career. It is a diverse profession that allows people from a broad range of backgrounds, and with a wide range of interests, to educate young people about the knowledge and values that we hold. I enjoy sharing my passion for English but I enjoy equally as much the process of helping students become confident, resilient young adults, with the capacity to excel in their career of choice.
